Use baking soda and a toothbrush or abrasive brush. Rub the metal item with salt and then squeeze the lemon juice on it. Mix 250 ml water with 25 ml about five teaspoons of oxalic acid. If cleaning a pan use a scouring pad rinse and towel dry.

Rinse and dry it carefully. White vinegar works well for removing rust from small metal items. Scrape off light loose rust with a wire brush. I am amazed at how many people have not heard of this method before.

Clean off any oil or grease on rusted metal before soaking. A paint scraper or metal putty knife may also do the trick. Start by washing the surface of the rusted metal with a washing liquid. Scrape off large areas of rust with the wire brush.

If you would rather avoid toxic chemicals there are several common household items that can safely remove rust from metal including white vinegar baking soda sandpaper and steel wool. To use soak the metal in white vinegar for a few hours and then scrub the rusty paste off. The vinegar reacts with the rust to dissolve it off of the metal. Leave the item for an hour or so then scour with steel wool or a metal brush removing the rust down to the metal.

Rinse the metal item and shake dry. If you re dealing with a lightly rusted surface you may just need to give it a quick scrub with a brush. Then drop in the rusted item and walk away. The old standby rust remover chemicals contain either phosphoric or hydrochloric acid to dissolve the rust.

How to remove rust from metal with powerful chemicals. Pour the rust remover solution in a plastic tub. The wire brush may scratch the metal but since you will have to paint and re galvanize it anyway this is ok. Scrape off peeling paint and powdery flaking rust until the surface is mostly smooth.

The first step is to clean off loose rust and flaking paint and then apply a rust inhibitive primer. Sandpaper can be used to remove rust from metal. You don t need to get down to bare shiny metal just clean off the flakes and powdery surface rust that prevent paint from adhering. Dust with baking soda it will stick to the damp areas making sure to cover all rusty areas.

However badly rusted metal areas need more prep work and possibly a special primer. The easy and safe way to remove rust at home. If the object is too big to soak directly in the white vinegar pour a layer over the top and allow it time to set. Soak the rusted item for up to 20 minutes.
