These dry cleaning solutions should go on a white cloth because the chemicals in the absorbent could bleach the cloth. Go indoors and rinse the item under cool water then soak it overnight in warm water and laundry detergent to remove the rest of the soot. If soot has gotten on your carpet try sprinkling the area with baking soda which will soak up some of it. Sponge the area with cold water and dry with a clean colourfast towel.

There are soap additives that can be used as well for additional cleaning power. Step 3 apply 2 to 3 drops of a bleach free dish soap to the area. Let stand at least one hour and then vacuum. Test your method on a small area first to prevent damage.
